Zo ontstond onder de christenen het gerucht dat die leerling niet zou sterven. Jezus had echter niet tegen Petrus gezegd dat hij niet zou sterven, maar: “Als Ik wil dat hij hier blijft totdat Ik terugkom, is dat jouw zaak toch niet?”
