Arimatiasta kotoisin oleva Joosef, joka oli – juutalaisten johtomiehiä peläten – salaa kuulunut Jeesuksen oppilaisiin, meni rohkeasti pyytämään Pilatukselta lupaa ottaa Jeesuksen ruumiin alas ristiltä. Pilatus antoi luvan, ja Joosef laski ruumiin alas.
