Jeesuksen oikeudenkäynti Kaifaan edessä päättyi aamuyöllä. Sieltä hänet vietiin Rooman maaherran palatsiin. Juutalaiset eivät itse voineet tulla sisälle, sillä pakanan taloon astuminen »saastuttaisi» heidät, eivätkä he sen jälkeen saisi syödä pääsiäislammasta.
