De oudsten van Gilad gaven Jefte ten antwoord: Laat dat nu maar; we keren nu immers tot u terug. Ge moet met ons mee gaan, om tegen de Ammonieten te strijden; dan zult ge aan het hoofd van alle bewoners van Gilad komen staan.
