De av Levis söner (ättlingar) som blir präster har ett bud enligt lagen [gr. nomos – Torah, Moseböckerna] att få tionde av folket [4 Mos 18:21-32], alltså av sina bröder [judiska landsmän], trots att de också härstammar från Abraham.
