Juutalaisten lakeihin perustuva vanha järjestelmä antoi vain hämärän kuvan kaikesta siitä hyvästä, mitä Kristus tekisi puolestamme. Vanhan järjestelmän aikana jouduttiin uhraamaan yhä uudelleen vuodesta toiseen, mutta sittenkään uhrit eivät voineet pelastaa näiden sääntöjen sitomia ihmisiä.
