మారాలో ఉన్న నీళ్ళు చేదుగా ఉన్నాయి కనుక ఆ నీళ్లు తాగలేకపోయారు. అందువల్ల దానికి మారా అనే పేరు వచ్చింది.

¶ And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.
