Nadat Farao het volk had laten gaan, leidde God hen niet langs de weg, die naar het land der Filistijnen voerde, hoewel die de kortste was. Want God dacht, dat het volk wel eens spijt kon krijgen, wanneer het tegenstand zou ontmoeten, en dan naar Egypte zou willen terugkeren.

¶ And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:
