[De fick den bästa tänkbara maten som kunde erbjudas i Babylon, men] Daniel var fast besluten (lade på sitt hjärta) att inte orena sig med kungens mat eller vinet som han drack [och bryta Guds lag genom att äta t.ex. griskött och mat offrat till avgudar]. Därför anhöll han hos chefen för hovtjänstemännen [Aspenas] att slippa orena sig.
