இப்பொழுது நான் எண்பது வயதுள்ளவன்; இனி நலமானது இன்னதென்றும், தீமையானது இன்னதென்றும் எனக்குத் தெரியுமோ? சாப்பிடுகிறதும் குடிக்கிறதும் உமது அடியேனுக்கு ருசியாக இருக்குமோ? பாடகர்கள் பாடகிகளுடைய சத்தத்தை இனிக் கேட்கக்கூடுமோ? உமது அடியேனான நான் இனி ராஜாவான என் ஆண்டவனுக்குப் பாரமாயிருக்கவேண்டியது என்ன?

I am this day fourscore years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?
