Entinen, Jumalan lakiin perustuva järjestelmä, joka kuitenkin tuotti ihmisille kuoleman, oli niin täynnä kirkkautta, etteivät israelilaiset voineet katsoa Mooseksen säteileviin kasvoihin, kun hän antoi heille laintaulut. Mooseksen kasvot sädehtivät Jumalan omaa kirkkautta, joka loisti niillä hetken.
