แล้วประชาชนจึงทูลซาอูลว่า “โยนาธานควรจะถึงตายหรือ เขาเป็นผู้ที่ได้นำให้มีชัยใหญ่ยิ่งนี้ในอิสราเอล ขอพระเจ้าอย่ายอมให้เป็นเช่นนั้นเลย พระเยโฮวาห์ทรงพระชนม์อยู่แน่ฉันใด เส้นผมของท่านสักเส้นหนึ่งจะไม่ตกถึงดินฉันนั้น เพราะในวันนี้ท่านได้กระทำศึกด้วยกันกับพระเจ้า” ประชาชนไถ่โยนาธานไว้ ท่านจึงไม่ถึงตาย

And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
