ரூபன் இஸ்ரவேலுக்கு முதலில் பிறந்த மூத்தமகன் ஆவான்; ஆனாலும் அவன் தன் தகப்பனுடைய படுக்கையைத் தீட்டுப்படுத்தியதால், கோத்திரத்து அட்டவணையில் அவன் முதற்பிறப்பவனாக கருதப்படாமல், அவனுடைய மூத்த மகன் என்கிற பிறப்புரிமை இஸ்ரவேலின் மகனாகிய யோசேப்பின் மகன்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது.

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.
